Democrats and Republicans alike are praising President Joe Biden’s call to increase police funding. “We should all agree: The answer is not to defund the police. It’s to fund the police. Fund them. Fund them. Fund them with resources and training,” Biden said.

Delivered during his first State of the Union Address, Biden’s rebuke of the “defund the police” movement received a standing ovation from members of his own party, including Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as from Republicans like House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise.

Democratic Representatives Val Demings and Josh Gottheimer tweeted their support for Biden’s statement, with Gotthemier writing, “I’m glad @POTUS and I agree that we need to fund—not defund—the police.”

Biden’s remarks also drew bipartisan cheers from beyond the Capitol. Republican Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said he was glad to see Biden “supporting our efforts to crack down on violent crime and re-fund our police.” KOMO News reported that Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, a Democrat, was “on board” with the President’s call to boost police spending.

When asked about Biden’s pro-police message, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said, “I think he spoke for all of us.”
