A new ABC News/Ipsos Poll found that the majority of Americans blame Vladimir Putin and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as the cause for the recent spike in gas prices. Seventy-one percent of respondents pointed the finger at Putin, while 68 percent said that oil and gas companies are to blame.
President Biden has responded by approving a release of 1 million barrels of oil per day for the next six months from the country’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve in order to lower prices.
“The scale of this release is unprecedented: the world has never had a release of oil reserves at this 1 million per day rate for this length of time,” the White House noted.
In addition, the President is seeking to impose harsh fines on gas companies idling on 9,000 unused but already approved permits to increase domestic production.
“Companies that continue to sit on non-producing acres will have to choose whether to start producing or pay a fee for each idled well and unused acre,” the administration said.
