Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proposed a $3 billion one-time bonus for police and other Michigan first responders.

In a press release, the governor discussed how law enforcement officers “made heroic sacrifices, putting their own health and safety on the line to ensure the rest of us were safe and had the supplies we needed to care for our families. They had our backs. We should have theirs.”

The funding for Whitmer’s “Hero Pay” was made possible due to the state budget surplus as well as money from the American Rescue Plan. It has not yet been announced when the funding will be released.

“I don’t believe police should be defunded,” Governor Whitmer has told the Free Press.

“I support rebuilding communities and rebuilding them in a way that creates real opportunity in an equitable and just manner.”
